Mobile telephony and health: 12 tips to mitigate the risks associated with DAS

For the last ten years, the radio frequencies emitted by mobile phones have been subject to different studies or researches to highlight the possible harmfulness of these waves. Measured in watts per kilogram (W/kg), the famous SAR (for specific absorption rate) indicates the amount of energy absorbed by the organism. European legislation has set a ceiling of 2 W/kg while in the Atlantic the maximum permissible radiation is 1.6 W/kg.

If the who is to be reassuring and a decree dating from 2003 requires manufacturers to indicate the DAS on their products, according to the precautionary principle, it is better to choose a mobile with the lowest SAR possible and follow these few recommendations. See our mobile rankings based on their DAS index.

- Teenagers under the age of 15 should not have access to a mobile phone. This elementary rule is not, however, respected by parents. The adolescent is particularly vulnerable to electromagnetic radiation.

- Avoid contact of a mobile phone with the belly of a pregnant woman. Again, this is a common sense elementary Board, with the cells of the embryo being very sensitive to radiation emitted by the mobile.

- Avoid approaching the mobile phone within 20 cm of a cardiac implant or other metal implants.

- When buying a new laptop, prefer a model whose value of DAS is the lowest possible, preferably less than 0.7 W/kg.

- Avoid wearing your mobile at height or against the heart, armpit, hip or genitals...

- Prefer the use of a wired pedestrian kit to keep the device away from your brain and ear. It's better to use a wired headset than a wireless headset that emits waves.

- Limit the number and duration of calls. On average, no more than 6 calls per day that will not exceed 3 minutes each. The ideal is to respect an average time of 1 h 30 between each call.

- Call in the maximum reception conditions! If you make a call while you are not capturing the network, the DAS emitted by the mobile phone can be multiplied by 2 or even 4!

- Avoid calling by moving.

- Do not call by car or any other metallic infrastructure. The effect of "Faraday cage" traps and impacts the waves emitted by the laptop.

- To avoid passive exposure to radiation, move away from the public when you make a call.

- Never keep a phone on or charging within 50 inches of your head overnight.
