Auto Repairing, Restore Auto Body Moldings

Refix rubber or vinyl crate moldings before they come off your car. Decorative accessories on newer car models are known to take off like nothing - here's how to put them back together before they end up on the highway.  

1. Repairing body moldings
You may be one of those people who ride happily with the rubber or vinyl mouldings of their bodies floating in the wind. Well, for less than $20, you can fix this problem once and for all before your expensive moldings end up in the dumpster of the highway maintenance truck. Get the following accessories: adhesive remover and fastening adhesive at a auto parts retailer. All you need is denatured alcohol, a plastic putty knife and clean rags.

Avoid having to travel at the last minute to buy the missing equipment by preparing everything in advance. Here's a list of what you'll need.

Adhesive remover
Double-sided fastening adhesive

2. Clean old glue residue
Soak a cotton cloth with adhesive solvent and clean old glue residue on the door. Do this in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, in your driveway, for example. Scrape old adhesive residue with a plastic putty knife and continue to apply the solvent and wipe until all traces of adhesive have disappeared. Then continue cleaning the surface with denatured alcohol to remove the last residue. Do not use abrasive products. The goal is to obtain a smooth and flawless surface for the fastening adhesive.

3. Before repairing it, clean the moulding
Carefully clean the back of the moulding by soaking it with adhesive solvent and rubbing and scraping old adhesive marks. This can be a daunting task, but take your time and don't get discouraged. When the surface is clean of any glue residue, wipe it with a clean cloth soaked in denatured alcohol.

4. The material needed for moulding
Materials required:
All you'll need for this repair is an adhesive remover and double-sided molding tape.

5. Apply duct tape to moulding
Apply double-sided tape to areas that will come into contact with the molding. Press the tape tightly along its entire length. For large mouldings, use two strips of duct tape as shown.
